As a preliminary schedule for the coming months here's a first preview of the ASOC’07 roadmap:

I am planning three releases, each estimated with a 1000€ of donations and a month of my time.

Thus, depending on the total of donations, the Antville Summer Of Code 2007 will take between four weeks and three months (or even more, let's see).

The first ASOC’07 release, dubbed 1.2, which right now – according to the current state of donations – looks like a safe bet, will contain the most important and overdue bug fixes and hopefully, some of the most wanted new features.

As there are quite some preparations to do to make the actual work happen at all, this might look like a small step altogether, nevertheless it will lift our old Antville software over quite some heavy distance (which relates to two years in the temporal dimension).

If we cross the magic 2.000€ mark, we can expect release 1.3 to contain most of the requested new features. Of course, bugs introduced with 1.2 will have to be fixed in this release, too.

Release 1.3 and a total of donations of 3.000€ will bring you the round-up of the little bit more extravagant feature requests, and again fixes for the bugs we will find in the previous release.

I am currently working on a detailed list of features for every release and hopefully will be able publish it at the beginning of next week.

Nach nicht einmal drei Tagen Sammeln von Spendenzusagen kann ich mitteilen: die Antville-Community hat die Spendierhosen an!

Ausgehend vom Resultat des Antville Server Fund 2002 (knapp 3.500€ wurden gespendet) hab ich die Reizschwelle der Zusagen bei 2.000€ angesetzt – und die wurde gestern Nacht bereits überschritten!

Im Schnitt wurden 45€ als Spende für den Summer Of Code 2007 zugesagt, was einen änhlich hohen Endbetrag in Aussicht stellt. Und damit lässt sich eine ganze Menge der geäußerten Wünsche realisieren!

Das Ding kann somit steigen, und ich werde heute noch die Überweisungsdaten veröffentlichen.

Vielleicht noch eine Bemerkung zum Verwendungszweck: ich werde während dieses Sommers nur noch halbtags meiner hauptberuflichen Beschäftigung nachgehen; die andere Hälfte meiner Arbeitszeit ist allein für Antville reserviert.

Ach ja, und wenn der Urheber dieses schönen Logos (waren Sie das selbst, Herr ichichich?) noch eine Variante mit Hinweis auf die Spendenaktion erschaffen könnte, würde ich es gern als offizielles Sujet zur Unterstützung des ASOC07 verwenden.

As there is obviously still enough interest in further developing Antville I want to try my best to care about its realization.

Thus, this summer 2007 shall be taking place under the sign of Antville, lest a sunny stream may enlighten ye good ole program code, and may warm the hearts of the Antville community.

Welcome to Antville Summer Of Code 2007.

I am going to summarize all proposals, wishes and ideas and rank these regarding their ease (or difficulty) of realization.

Additionally, some further, absolutely necessary replacements in the code have to be adjoined. (E.g. in terms of security vulnerabilities or overall program structure.)

All of these will be wrapped in feature packages which the community freely can choose to fund in order to make the modifications happen.

Consequently, there is an important difference to earlier activities of this kind: no altruistic approach, anymore.

Similar to the Antville Server Fund 2002 which made it possible to buy new hardware five years ago, now is the time to afford overdue revisions of the software based on donations.

I will spend half of my working time with further developing Antville, and I estimate three (calendar) months should be sufficient for the work to be done while 1.000€ should be enough to compensate for one month.

As extra reward the whole development process is to become more open and more intelligible.

Da es offenbar durchaus noch reges Interesse an einer Weiterentwicklung von Antville gibt, möchte ich dafür sorgen, dass diese auch in die Tat umgesetzt werden kann.

Der kommende Sommer 2007 soll daher ganz im Zeichen von Antville stehen, auf dass sonniges Licht den guten, alten Programmcode erhellen, und die Herzen der Antville-User erwärmen möge:

Ich werde alle Verbesserungsvorschläge, Wünsche und Ideen zusammenfassen und meiner Einschätzung nach in puncto ihrer Umsetzbarkeit reihen.

Dazu gesellen sich ein paar weitere, unbedingt notwendige Umbau-Maßnahmen im Code (z.B. bezüglich Security-Schwachstellen oder genereller Programmstruktur).

Dann werden daraus Pakete geschnürt, die über Spendenbeiträge von der Community finanziert werden können, um die enthaltenen Änderungen zu realisieren.

Es gibt somit einen wichtigen Unterschied zu früheren Aktivitäten dieser Art: keine Selbstausbeutung mehr.

Analog zum Antville Server Fund 2002, durch den vor fünf Jahren die nötige neue Hardware angeschafft werden konnte, soll nun die überfällige Überarbeitung der Software durch Spenden ermöglicht werden.

Ich selbst werde dann für die Dauer des ASOC’07 die Hälfte meiner Arbeitszeit allein für Antville reservieren. Ich habe drei (Kalender-)Monate für die Änderungen eingeplant, wobei 1.000€ als Kompensation pro Monat ausreichen sollten.

Als zusätzliche Gegenleistung soll der gesamte Entwicklungsprozess offener und klarer durchgeführt werden.
